EXCERPT

FBI Special Agent SallyAnne Jagger arrived at the bureau’s San Francisco office just as the sun rose over the horizon.

She too had spent a sleepless night.

She was still in shock over the kiss that she and her investigative partner, Lionel Porter Polk VII, had shared the night before while transcribing their report from the sting that Miranda had set up at the chic Presidio Heights restaurant, Spruce.

What had precipitated the kiss—and Lionel’s immediate apology for overstepping such a personal boundary—was what SallyAnne could only deduce as jealousy on his part. A stranger had tried to pick up SallyAnne as they were surveilling Miranda and her clients, Seamus and Gretchen McCoppin.

The man had been persistent.

Granted, he’d also been drunk.

Still, SallyAnne had been flattered—especially when she realized he was Egan Gable—the author of her favorite book, Extracurricular.

On the other hand, Lionel had been rude in his attempt to shoo Egan away.

Unfortunately, Egan had picked up on the fact that they’d been eyeing Miranda and the McCoppins.

Such irony! Egan knew them well because he was now teaching at Ashbury Academy. And as it turned out, he was also the teacher liaison to AA’s trustee board—one of the reasons his voice had sounded so familiar to SallyAnne, since the FBI had been listening in on the meetings.

Before they could stop him, he had tottered over to their table.

The good news: as promised, Miranda set up the McCoppins to implicate themselves.

The bad news: Miranda was successful in recruiting Egan for her illicit activities.

Although he’d initially balked at her offer to act as proctor for the students in her concierge program—in other words, take their tests for them—he’d finally agreed. Apparently, Egan was desperate for money. Not only that, Miranda was holding some threat over his head. Their conversation didn’t reveal exactly what.

Because of SallyAnne’s nostalgia for Egan’s book, she despised Miranda even more for the hold she had over Egan.

As she rounded the corner to her cubicle, she caught sight of Lionel in the break room. He was deep in discussion with the tech agent also assigned to the case, Riley Kemp.

At that moment, Lionel looked over and saw her too. He smiled.

SallyAnne felt a blush creeping up her neck. She forced a smile onto her lips and strode over. “I guess if I’m ever to make it in earlier than you, I’ll just have to put a cot in my cubicle.”

“I…couldn’t sleep,” he admitted.

Because of what happened between us last night?

She longed to ask him that.

“Yeah, well, it seems that none of us is going to get much sleep over these next few months,” Riley crowed. “This case is heating up by the nanosecond!”

SallyAnne frowned. “I can only imagine, from what you texted Lionel last night.”

“Oh, you ain’t heard nothin’ yet,” he assured her. “Besides the X-rated sexfest, they were alerted that AA’s headmistress passed last night!”

“What?” Lionel and SallyAnne exclaimed in unison.

Riley nodded toward the conference room. “I’ve got the whole audio cued up so that you can hear it yourself.”

As much as SallyAnne ached for a cup of coffee, she followed Riley down the hall.

She hadn’t realized Lionel was still in the break room until she sat down. A moment later he walked in, carrying two mugs of coffee. He placed one in front of her. The coffee was light, just as she liked it. One sip told her he’d somehow picked up on the fact that she doctored her coffee with two cubes of sugar.

“Thank you,” she stammered.

He grinned shyly. “My pleasure.”

Don’t read anything into this, SallyAnne warned herself. It’s nothing more than a random act of kindness.

But she knew better.

Her previous partner, also male, had automatically assumed she’d bring him a cup whenever she got one for herself. Immediately, she cured him of that expectation by substituting salt for sugar.

When she and Lionel had first partnered up, she’d never offered to get his coffee. He’d followed her lead in forgoing beverage requests. Still, she too had watched him order coffee numerous times over the past few years and knew he took his black.

One good turn deserved another, she thought.

But something much bigger than a coffee run. As with his gesture, it had to be something implicit of how she hoped the kiss hadn’t ruined their friendship.

In fact, it would express the opposite: that the intimacy they’d shared had strengthened their relationship.

That she thought of him as more than just a friend.

I guess I have Egan to thank for motivating Lionel to show his feelings for me, SallyAnne reasoned.

All the more reason it pained SallyAnne that the FBI sting had embroiled Egan in Miranda’s illegal activities.

She didn’t know what Miranda had on Egan, but whatever it was, she hoped it wasn’t illegal.

If it turned out it wasn’t, SallyAnne vowed to do what she could to help Egan get out from under Miranda’s thumb.

* * *

The agents listened as Miranda ecstatically moaned through her first sex bout with Egan. At one point, SallyAnne had to smack Riley on the shoulder to stop him from snickering.

They also listened to Miranda’s conversation with Daniel. Although Miranda’s words were drenched in sympathy, SallyAnne muttered, “She’s putting on a show.”

Lionel looked surprised. “How can you tell?”

SallyAnne shrugged. “Because whenever she talks to, or about, Audrey, she has a distinct edge to her voice.”

Lionel thought for a moment. “You know, you’re right! Why do you think that is?”

“It might have something to do with the fact that Audrey is everything Miranda isn’t: kind, thoughtful, and morally sound.”

Riley, who’d kept his eyes closed through the cacophony of ecstatic moans, opened one long enough to declare, “I’ll bet she’s hated Audrey since they were in high school.”

SallyAnne and Lionel exchanged glances. That thought had never occurred to either of them.

“That would mean she was also in school with Tallulah Wishart and Bliss Thackeray Belluci,” Lionel pointed out. “As of yet, none of these women seem to have warmed up to her, let alone mention the good old days.”

“If it’s because they can’t stand her, I’m sure that drives her up a wall,” SallyAnne retorted.

“By the way, Melamed left word that the surveillance subpoenas came through on Jammerhead, Nira Patel, and Jess Smallwood,” Lionel announced. “We should have the ones for the McCoppins by tomorrow. Miranda gets the SAT key next Friday. Until then, we’re to babysit her as she makes calls to her SoCal clients so that we can record her reiterating the terms.”

Riley added, “Tech will start monitoring these witnesses, as well as their college-bound children, for messages and conversations with Miranda.”

“Great,” Lionel replied. “And after Melamed reads our report about Egan Gable crashing yesterday’s meeting between Miranda and the McCoppins, he’ll ask for a surveillance subpoena for him as well.” Noting SallyAnne’s frown, he added, “I have to give your boy Egan some credit for at least one thing. Despite the fringe benefits, he shut down Miranda quick enough.”

“He’s not my boy,” SallyAnne sniffed. “And he certainly didn’t appreciate being sexually abused by that conniving felon.”

As soon as the remark was out of her mouth, SallyAnne regretted it. The last thing she needed was for Lionel to think she had a soft spot for Egan. He was jealous enough as it was.

On the other hand, maybe that was a good thing.

“Sure, okay, if you say so.” He looked at his watch. “I’ll call her attorney at eight so that he can inform her to expect us by nine.” Lionel grimaced at the thought.

Miranda is just as deplorable to him as she is to me, SallyAnne realized.

It was comforting to know.
